In everyday language

Some AI apps can do more than chat: they can work with files or apps when you allow it. Learn which access a task needs before turning it on.

Full lesson & technical details

Chat can only talk. A workstation lets the AI open a terminal, edit files, click through apps and ship. What each capability is, and which one each job needs.

Four kinds of access

Capability What it means Needs Used for
Terminal + files (Desktop Commander) The AI runs commands and reads or edits files in folders you allow Node.js, the desktop app, 1 minute Building apps, installing packages, deploying, bulk file work
Computer use The AI sees your screen and clicks, types and scrolls in apps Desktop app, paid plan, per-app permission Anything without an API: a desktop app, a form, Xcode, Blender
Connectors (MCP) The AI calls a service through its API: Gmail, Drive, GitHub, Cloudflare, your CRM Sign in once Reading your data, posting, creating records
Browser control The AI drives a real browser with your logins Chrome extension or the in-app browser Websites with no API, dashboards, research

Which one for which job

  • Build a web app and deploy it: terminal + files, plus the Cloudflare connector or Wrangler.
  • Make an iPhone app: terminal + files for the code, computer use for Xcode.
  • Post for a client across five platforms: a connector to the scheduling tool.
  • Fix a broken WordPress site: browser control, or terminal if you have SSH.

The mental model

Think of it as hiring a capable assistant and handing over keys one at a time. Each key is a permission you can revoke. The lessons hand over the keys in the order that is safe: a project folder first, the terminal inside it, then apps, then accounts.

What changes once it is set up

Instead of copying code out of a chat window, you say “build it, run it, fix the errors, deploy it, send me the link.” The AI does the loop. That loop is the entire reason the advanced tracks can promise what they promise.

Instructions you can copy (prompts)

Copy the instructions, replace the words inside {braces} with your details, and paste them into your AI tool. Check and edit the answer.

Ask the AI to audit your machine Any tool
I am setting up my computer so you can build and deploy web apps with me. Ask me, one question at a time, what operating system I have, whether Node.js, Git and a terminal are installed, and which desktop app I use (Claude or ChatGPT). Then give me the shortest ordered checklist of what to install, with the exact command to verify each step.
Try it

Run the card in your AI app and follow its checklist until `node --version` and `git --version` both print a version. Paste both outputs below.

Quick knowledge check

3 questions, 60% passes. Checkpoints, the certification exam (three versions) and the reviewed final project are unlocked with a free account.

  1. Which capability lets the AI run commands and edit files in a folder you allow?
  2. To let the AI work inside Xcode or Blender you need:
  3. Why hand over keys one at a time?
