In everyday language

Pinterest is search, not social: keywords in profile, boards, titles, descriptions and alt text; fresh pins over repins; outbound clicks as the money metric; and the planning horizon of weeks, not days.

Pinterest is search, not social: keywords in profile, boards, titles, descriptions and alt text; fresh pins over repins; outbound clicks as the money metric; and the planning horizon of weeks, not days.

Search, not feed

People come to Pinterest to plan: a wedding, a kitchen, a gift, an outfit. They type phrases. Pinterest matches those phrases against the words on your profile, boards, pin titles, descriptions and alt text, then ranks by engagement (saves, clicks, close-ups). A pin can keep bringing traffic for a year; nothing else in social does that.

Pinterest flow: search phrase, pin, save, click to site

What counts

  • Fresh pins: a new image (even for an old link) counts as fresh; repinning the same image does not.
  • Keywords: in the pin title (first 40 characters matter most), description (first 50–60 characters show), board name and description, and alt text.
  • Consistency: 1–2 pins a day beats 30 on the first of the month.
  • The link: every pin points to a specific page (a product, a post, a landing page), never the homepage.
  • Engagement: saves and outbound clicks tell Pinterest to show the pin more.

Planning horizon

Pinterest users plan 30–60 days ahead (holidays 90). Pin Christmas gifts in October, weddings in January and February, back-to-school in July. Trends shows the curves.

The money metric

Outbound clicks (people leaving Pinterest to the client’s site). Impressions are vanity; followers barely matter. Report clicks, saves and what they led to.

Account safety

No link shorteners, no pinning the same image to ten boards in an hour, no boards named with hashtags, no misleading images. Pinterest limits accounts for spam-like behavior and it is slow to recover.

Worked example

Example · Trends notes

“bridesmaid gifts” peaks Feb–Apr and Sep (wedding planning seasons); “initial necklace gift” rises from mid-October to mid-December (holidays) with a smaller bump in late April (Mother’s Day); “stacking rings” is flat year-round with a slight summer lift. Plan: bridesmaid boards in January, holiday gift pins from October 1.
