Relevance gets you in the race; conversion wins it. What Etsy, Amazon and Shopify search actually weigh, and the audit that tells you why a listing is invisible.
Two gates
Gate one, relevance: does the listing match the words the buyer typed? Title, tags or search terms, category, attributes and (less) the description. If the phrase is nowhere, the listing cannot appear.
Gate two, performance: of the listings that match, which get clicked, favorited and bought? Click-through from the first image and title, conversion from price, reviews, shipping and the description. A listing that matches but never converts drifts to page nine.
What each marketplace weighs
- Etsy: title and 13 tags (phrases up to 20 characters), category and attributes, listing quality score (clicks, favorites, purchases), shipping price (free shipping to the US is a boost), recency, shop reviews. Descriptions matter for conversion and a little for search.
- Amazon Handmade / Amazon: title (up to 200 characters, but the first 80 matter), backend search terms (250 bytes), bullet points, A+ content, price, reviews, fulfillment speed. Sales velocity dominates.
- Shopify (your own site): Google is the search engine. Page title, H1, product description, alt text, collection pages, site speed, reviews schema. Treat each product page like a mini SEO page (T4 method).
The five-minute audit
For one listing: 1) type the product’s obvious phrase into the marketplace search and see where it appears (not at all is normal); 2) note the title’s first five words; 3) count tags that are single words (bad) vs phrases (good); 4) check the first image at thumbnail size; 5) read the first 200 characters of the description as a buyer with one question. The audit output is a table of five findings; it is also your free sales hook.
What you promise
Findability (the phrases are present and sensible), a conversion checklist (image, first line, questions answered), and a tracking sheet. Never “page one in 30 days”.
Worked example
| Area | Problem | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title | “Sea Salt & Cedar” only | No buyer types a scent name; invisible for “soy candle gift” | Lead with the search phrase: “Soy Candle Gift for Her, Sea Salt & Cedar, 8 oz Hand-Poured” |
| Tags | 9 single words (candle, soy, gift…) | Single words lose to phrases; 4 tags unused | 13 phrases: “cozy candle gift”, “book lover candle”… |
| First image | Product on white, no size cue | Looks like every candle; no scale | Lifestyle shot with hand or book for scale; scent note text overlay |
